As part of my sustainable journey, I have been trying to eliminate chemicals from my life, so I’ve been researching clean beauty products, as I wanted to find brands and products I could trust to balance out the hundreds, if not thousands of chemicals I have already unwittingly absorbed, digested and inhaled during my lifetime. I can’t do anything about the past, but what I can do is find the cleanest and healthiest products for my skin from brands I trust and am willing to recommend.

The US Environmental Working Group (EWG) a non-profit organization advocating for healthy ingredients in consumer products, estimates that the average person exposes themselves to over 125 different chemical ingredients every single day, other organisations say it’s closer to 200 a day. In the US, the Food and Drug Association (FDA) does not require the cosmetic industry to put their products through safety testing, meaning, there is no federal regulation on what ingredients can or cannot go into skincare products. This has resulted in numerous chemicals commonly used in American products (and other countries with similar standards, or with no standards at all), that are banned in European countries.
Many cosmetic and personal hygiene manufacturers do not acknowledge the health implications of some of these chemical ingredients, claiming there is no firm evidence that they pose a health risk, but researchers and organizations such as the EWG say that research must not just focus on individual product exposure but must also find a way to evaluate the cumulative impact, or “chemical body burden”, of many products used over many years.
The phrase “chemical body burden,” is used to describe the concentration (or amount) of chemicals in the body at any given time. Each of us has some load of toxic chemicals stored in or passing through our bodies, they can be both naturally occurring and man-made, and enter the body through inhalation, from swallowing them in contaminated food or water, or they can be absorbed through skin. Some chemicals or their breakdown products (metabolites) lodge in our bodies for only a short while before being excreted, but continuous exposure to such chemicals can create a “persistent” body burden.
These chemicals can be detected in blood, adipose (fat) tissue, semen, muscle, bone, brain tissue, or other organs, as well as in urine and breast milk, and studies show that our body burden starts growing before we’re even born, as a woman who is pregnant can pass them to her developing fetus through the placenta; new-born babies have been born with more than 287 man-made and industrial chemicals already in their blood, and this number is thought to grow to more than 700 by adulthood.
Most people are unaware that they carry chemical compounds in their bodies and the health effects of chronic exposure to low levels of chemicals are only beginning to be studied. Once released into the world some chemicals cause toxic reactions, and some have been found to persist in the environment for years; some are even referred to as “eternal” compounds, because they do not degrade; but what is clear is that the accumulative nature of these chemicals can cause a range of non-infectious human health problems, including direct damage to the lungs, liver, kidney, bones, blood, brain and other nerves, and the reproductive systems.

Greenwashing and sneaky lies have put us on our guard and there are so many terms, symbols and marketing jargon in use that we have to decipher on labels, that it can be overwhelming and confusing, and then there are the ingredients themselves; we know they are important, but how can we know what each ingredient is, what it does, and if it’s good for our skin or whether it’s harmful?

THE DEFINITION OF "clean beauty"
Let’s start off with defining “Clean Beauty”, a term that is evolving to describe the movement which is pushing the cosmetics industry to create higher standards. Clean Beauty can be defined by products that are mindfully created and produced without any toxic ingredients that are ethically sourced and are made with the health of our bodies and the environment in mind.
Another really important way to define Clean Beauty is by reading labels and studying ingredients, and just as critically, looking at the brands ethos, ethics, values, mission and how they align themselves with the world, in other words looking at the brand as a whole.
