EARTH DAY: Brands helping to save the earth

Feature Photo by Elena Mozhvilo on Unsplash

Earth Day is an annual event on April 22 to demonstrate support for environmental protection. First held on April 22, 1970, it now includes a wide range of events coordinated globally by EARTHDAY.ORG (formerly Earth Day Network) involving 1 billion people in more than 193 countries.

Throughout the years, Earth Day event organizers have come to a simple conclusion: When people come together and make small changes, the impact can be tremendous. Today, 193 countries participate in Earth Day through community-led volunteer events.

IN CELEBRATION OF EARTH DAY

In celebration of Earth Day this year, I wanted to give a shout out to some of my favourite earth friendly brands, some of which are offering great discounts for Earth Day on 22nd April.

One way of ensuring a brand is genuinely earth-friendly is if it has B Corp certification; with many brands claiming to be “clean”, “green” and eco-friendly, B Corp certification makes it easy for consumers to identify brands that are truly dedicated to the betterment of the world.

WHAT IS B CORP?

What is B Corp? B, which stands for beneficial, and Corp, meaning corporation, is a certification which measures a company’s entire social and environmental performance and evaluates how a company’s operations and business model impacts on their workers, community, environment, and customers. B Corp certification is granted to companies that uphold high social and environmental standards in all facets of their business, and certification can take years depending on the size of the corporation.

The B Corp qualifying process dives deep into every element of the business from the supply chain and input materials to charitable giving and employee benefits and is supported by transparency and accountability requirements.

Companies that are awarded B Corp status have committed to using their business to work toward a more inclusive and sustainable economy and work towards creating stronger communities, reduced inequality, lower levels of poverty, a healthier environment, and the creation of more high-quality jobs with dignity and purpose.

EARTH INITIATIVES

Some businesses choose to do more by giving back to organizations that support the planet, social causes and awareness of other global issues and celebrate Earth Day, every day, by committing 1% of annual sales to environmental non-profits around the globe.

In an effort to help brands offset their environmental impact, the global non-profit 1% for the Planet, launched by the CEO of Patagonia Yvon Chouinard, and Craig Mathews, founder of Blue Ribbon Flies, has helped 1,800 brands pledge to give 1% of their profits to environmental conservation groups since 2002. This is now a global movement with the intention to help fund diverse environmental organizations so that collectively they can be a more powerful source in solving the world’s problems.

One Tree Planted is a non-profit organization based in Vermont that focuses on global reforestation. Areas impacted by deforestation will receive donations to plant trees and help offset the devastation.

Trees help reduce the effect of climate change. They clean the air we breathe, filter the water we drink, absorb harmful carbon from the atmosphere, provide habitat to over 80% of the world’s terrestrial biodiversity, help decrease stress and anxiety, plus much more. Forests provide jobs to over 1.6 billion people.

It is unfortunate we lose about 46-58 thousand square miles of forest every year. Together we can make a positive impact on the world we live in but first, be the change. To learn more about One Tree Planted, visit their website at www.onetreeplanted.org
