In the fast-paced world of beauty and self-care, it’s easy to get lost in the whirlwind of hair trends that sweep through social media platforms like TikTok and Instagram. One term that has gained popularity but remains elusive in its definition is “hair wellness”. With TikTok and other social media platforms becoming hubs for beauty enthusiasts, it’s no wonder that the term “hair wellness” can be difficult to decipher. From intricate braiding techniques to DIY hair masks using kitchen ingredients, trends constantly evolve, making it challenging to separate fads from genuinely beneficial practices.
This blog aims to demystify the term “hair wellness”, explore its meaning, and provide practical tips on incorporating it into your daily routine.
WHAT IS HAIR WELLNESS?
Hair wellness is all about taking a holistic approach to your hair’s health that goes beyond the latest trends. This means focusing on factors such as diet, hydration, and stress management to enhance your hair’s well-being.
As someone who likes a bit of colour in her hair, I find it really important to achieve hair wellness by prioritising clean products and healthy lifestyle habits, undoubtedly just as you might choose organic produce or non-toxic cleaners for your home.
Rather than pursuing fleeting styles, hair wellness should encourage a sustainable, long-term approach to hair care, that extends well beyond the hair itself. Given that the scalp is one of the most absorbent parts of our body, it’s crucial to be mindful of the chemicals we use to dye, bleach, straighten, curl or even wash our hair.
WAYS TO EMBRACE HAIR WELLNESS
Hair wellness is a comprehensive approach to hair health that focuses on the underlying causes of visible symptoms. Here I’ve listed some of my personal favourite practices that promote optimal hair wellness:
Stress Reduction
Incorporating clean hair products and healthy lifestyle choices, such as exercise, a balanced diet, and mindfulness practices, can lead to fuller, shinier, and healthier hair in just a few weeks (as well as a healthier and happier self).
Regular physical activity is known to reduce stress levels by promoting the release of endorphins, which are natural mood elevators. Lower stress levels may help prevent or minimize hair loss, as chronic stress has been linked to various hair-related issues.
Diet
Foods rich in nutrients and minerals promote hair growth and help combat hair loss. Nutritional yeast, legumes, sunflower seeds, mushrooms, egg yolks, salmon, almonds, sweet potatoes and other foods rich in natural biotin are excellent options. Also, as most of the body’s biotin is stored in the liver, organ meats of certain animals are a rich source of biotin.
You can also take a daily supplement, such as GRO Biotin Gummies, or Clean Biotin from British Supplements (made without any fillers, binding or bulking agents) for an easy boost.
Scalp Care
Healthy hair begins with a healthy scalp. After years of using hair products filled with toxic chemicals, silicones, and synthetic fragrances, deep cleaning the skin on your scalp should become a part of your weekly routine. Use high-quality ingredients such as organic-based hair products, which contain vegan, plant-based ingredients to support the appearance of longer, denser, and healthier-looking hair.
Thankfully, scalp care is about to become one of the biggest beauty trends for 2024, so you’re about to see a whole new list of products available for this!
Avoiding Harmful Habits
Daily lifestyle choices have a significant impact on our body’s internal ecosystem, affecting our hair’s wellness. Too much screen time, smoking, inadequate sleep, poor nutrition, and excessive alcohol consumption can trigger hair loss. Consider making a few changes to your routine, such as reducing screen time, quitting smoking, and limiting alcohol intake.
Exercise
Regular exercise increases blood circulation, which is essential for good scalp and hair health. This increased blood flow delivers essential nutrients and oxygen to hair follicles, promoting their health and function.
Exercise helps regulate hormone levels, including those related to stress (cortisol) and sex hormones (testosterone and estrogen), which can positively influence hair health. Regular physical activity can improve the body’s ability to absorb and utilize nutrients from the diet and has anti-inflammatory effects, which can help mitigate inflammation and promote a healthier environment for hair follicles.
Resistance exercises also help increase the body’s own IGF-1 levels, which supports healthy hair growth.
You can explore various ways to exercise and find out what works best for you. I love to practice yoga and pilates whenever I can, for example, and was hooked on kickboxing when I was living in Vietnam. Others might enjoy jogging or high-cardio exercising more.

DIY hair TREATMENTS
These easy, affordable DIY hair treatments all use household ingredients that you probably already have at home. While some may utilize your blender, others are as simple as a single ingredient that will get your hair into tip-top shape, whether you suffer from dry hair, fine hair, an itchy scalp, or dandruff.
RICE WATER treatment FOR FINE HAIR
This one was recommended by my hairdresser as I have fine hair and split ends! Rice water makes a nourishing hair elixir that helps strengthen hair and is made in these simple steps:
Start by taking a cup of uncooked rice, rinsing it thoroughly, and then adding two or three cups of water. Allow the rice to soak in the water for approximately 30 minutes. After soaking, strain the rice water into a bowl. This strained liquid will serve as your homemade hair elixir.
Next, you have the option to either boil the rice water or ferment it. Some believe that fermenting the rice water can boost antioxidant levels. Choose your preferred method based on your personal preferences.
After shampooing your hair, use the rice water as a hair rinse. Pour it onto your hair and be sure to massage it into your strands and, if desired, your scalp. Allow the rice water to sit on your hair for approximately 20 minutes. This gives your hair time to absorb the beneficial nutrients present in the rice water.
After the 20-minute duration, rinse your hair thoroughly to remove the rice water. Complete your hair-washing routine by applying your chosen conditioner. This step helps lock in moisture and leaves your hair feeling soft and manageable.
Bask in the results of your natural hair treatment. Regular use of rice water can contribute to improved hair health and shine. Experiment with boiling or fermenting based on personal preference and observe the glow of your revitalized locks.
banana protein smoothie for thinning hair
For those with thinning hair, especially baby-fine strands, concealing a visible scalp or worrying about hair loss can be significant concerns. Combat these worries with a protein-rich treatment designed to add volume to a delicate mane.
Follow this tip from Audrey Davis-Sivasothy, author of Hair Care Rehab: The Ultimate Hair Repair and Reconditioning Manual: Create a “banana protein smoothie” by blending amino acid-rich bananas and eggs, promoting hair elasticity, strength, and thickness.
To use, blend two egg yolks, two ripe bananas, two to three tablespoons of honey, half a cup of conditioner, and two tablespoons of olive oil until fully pureed. Apply the mixture generously, leaving it on for 20 to 30 minutes before rinsing with cool water. According to Davis-Sivasothy, the results are immediate, though it’s essential to note that the effects last until your next shampoo.
EGG TREATMENT FOR BRITTLE HAIR
Strengthen your strands with a simple and effective remedy. Dry and brittle hair not only presents its own challenges but can also result in increased breakage and lackluster appearance.
An excellent solution involves using egg yolks, a technique favored for its ability to nourish and strengthen hair follicles. To minimize the egg smell, mix in a little lemon. When applying, ensure the mixture covers your hair from roots to ends, allowing it to sit for 30 minutes to an hour to thoroughly penetrate the hair shaft and provide optimal strengthening benefits.
hair treatment for an itchy scalp
Whether the itchiness stems from a serious condition like psoriasis or a more minor issue like dryness, tea tree oil can be a highly effective solution, which is known for its antifungal properties.
To use, drip three drops of the oil onto a cotton swab and gently dab it onto the scalp. If the oil causes irritation, consider diluting 1 ½ tablespoons of tea tree oil in one cup of warm water. For combating dryness, another approach involves breaking a Vitamin E capsule and applying the oil to itchy areas. This helps moisturize the skin, exfoliate dead cells, and unclog hair follicles. Leave the oil on overnight and rinse it out in the morning for soothing relief.
Tea Tree is particularly good for oily hair and as well as alleviating a dry scalp, it also helps with dandruff and even lice.
Essential Oils for Hair wellness
Chamomile: For fine to normal hair. Conditions and helps scaly scalp. Gives blonde highlights
Lavender: Good for all hair types. Calms the scalp.
Peppermint: For dry hair. Stimulates scalp increasing hair growth.
Rosemary: For oily hair. Promotes hair growth as well as a dandruff treatment.
Thyme: Helps treat hair loss
