A VEGAN’s PERSPECTIVE: VEGANUARY

In the quiet corners of corporate offices, amidst the hustle of deadlines and the buzz of coffee machines, there are stories that often go unnoticed – personal narratives that unfold quietly, reshaping lives in profound ways. In the heart of our workplace, I had the privilege of sitting down to chat with La Toyah, a colleague whose radiant and flawless skin serves as a living testament to the merits of veganism.

In this article, I delve into La Toyah’s journey – the questions that arose, the challenges faced, and the joys discovered in embracing a vegan lifestyle. As we unravel La Toyah’s narrative, we explore the broader implications of Veganuary and the power of individual choices to shape a more compassionate world.

What is Veganuary?

Veganuary is a combination of veganism and January.

As the name suggests, the campaign is centred around encouraging people all over the world to switch to a plant-based diet during the month of January, abstaining from the consumption of animal products such as meat, dairy, eggs, and honey.

Since the campaign was launched by Veganuary –  a charitable organisation, as well as the name of the initiative, in 2023, 706,965 people worldwide had signed up for Veganuary, which increased to 1.8 million in January 2024, according to World Animal Foundation.

The campaign aims to raise awareness about the impact of food choices on issues like animal welfare, environmental sustainability, and personal health. It provides resources, recipes, and support to help people make the transition to a vegan lifestyle, even if it’s just for a month. Many individuals use Veganuary as an opportunity to explore plant-based alternatives, discover new recipes, and gain a better understanding of the ethical and environmental considerations associated with their food choices.

Interview with La Toyah Young

La Toyah’s story, akin to that of vegan activist Ed Winters, unveils a moment of awakening that altered her perspective on the food she consumed and the impact it had on living beings.

Ed’s encounter with the tragic news of hundreds of chickens meeting a gruesome end on the M62 in May 2014, prompted him to question the ethics of his dietary choices and to reconsider the contents of his fridge, where a leftover KFC meal awaited.

The vivid images of broken wings and crushed bodies resonated deeply with him, sparking a realisation that the animals we consume also experience pain and suffering.

As she stumbled upon Ed’s YouTube video recounting the aftermath of the M62 lorry crash and the issues within the meat industry, La Toyah, too, found herself in a moment of reflection. Normally she wouldn’t have stopped to watch the whole video, but something caught her attention.

The shared narrative struck a chord, whilst biting into her KFC the parallels between their experiences appeared evident – a pivotal moment of realisation that led to a profound shift in lifestyle choices.

In 2019, having already embraced a vegetarian lifestyle, La Toyah returned from a holiday in New York to find that a vegan craze had swept across the UK. Inspired by this growing trend and faced with the challenge of sourcing vegetarian options during her travels, she made a dedicated commitment to adopt a fully vegan diet.

frequently asked questions

what does it mean to be vegan?

Today, being vegan is no longer confined to a mere dietary preference; it has evolved into a holistic lifestyle that extends beyond food choices to include decisions about clothing, beauty products, and more. It represents a comprehensive commitment to ethical living, aligning personal choices with compassion for all living beings and the environment.

In the pursuit of this admirable goal, it’s crucial to acknowledge that achieving perfection may not be feasible for everyone, which is why I love Veganuary so much.  La Toyah, recognising the challenges, prefers the term “plant-based” over “vegan.”

This distinction underscores the idea that every effort, regardless of its scale, contributes significantly to the larger cause. Personally, I firmly believe that celebrating the choices we make, whether large or small, is vital. Each decision reflects a step towards a more compassionate and sustainable world, emphasizing that positive change is an accumulation of individual efforts.

what are the benefits of being vegan?

Going vegan was easier than La Toyah expected;

“Going vegan was easier than I expected; I felt that my health had improved, and along the way, I discovered great-tasting food that made the transition even more enjoyable”.

According to a report in the european journal of clinical nutrition, vegans reportedly boast the lowest BMI when compared to meat-eaters, vegetarians, and pescatarians, potentially attributed to their nutrient-dense, filling diets consisting of foods like beans, legumes, whole grains, fruit, and vegetables—all of which are rich in fibre.

what are the disadvantages of being vegan?

While the potential downsides of adopting a vegan lifestyle center on ensuring sufficient intake of essential vitamins, nutrients, and minerals, there are now brands dedicated to addressing these concerns. They offer 100% vegan and plant-based supplements, providing a convenient solution for those mindful of maintaining a well-rounded and balanced diet.

Potential challenges however, may include obtaining sufficient complete protein, as meat, dairy, and eggs are primary sources. Calcium intake might be compromised without traditional sources like cheese and milk, but alternatives include beans, kale, tofu, and almonds. Maintaining adequate iron levels is crucial, and plant-based sources such as lentils, chickpeas, and dark chocolate can help. Vitamin B12, primarily found in animal products, can be obtained from fortified sources like yeast extract, breakfast cereals, and plant-based milk for those following a vegan diet.

do you miss meat and cheese?

Frequently, the question often arises about whether La Toyah misses meat, a sentiment she dismisses, given the remarkable transformation her taste buds have undergone. The human body is an extraordinary and adaptable thing, yet adjustments to a new diet can sometimes take time. La Toyah’s journey of eating only plant-based food was remarkably smooth, mirroring the generally painless process of adopting a vegan lifestyle, however what she did find more difficult was finding vegan brands.

We also discussed the challenges of navigating the vegan space when faced with limited options, with La Toyah shedding light on the complexities of aligning personal values with available choices. For example, although there are many supermarkets today selling vegan cheeses, in our chat, La Toyah pointed out the scrutiny faced by cheese companies offering both traditional and vegan options. The critique arises from the concern that by aligning with these brands, they may inadvertently support unethical farming practices and contribute to an industry with questionable ethical standards.

brand recommendations

Notably, since 2019, one of the most evident changes related to the rise in veganism is the increase in vegan products. There are vegan alternatives available for virtually every product traditionally made from animal derivatives such as cheese, milk, meat, and eggs, as well as vegan alternatives for beauty products, clothing and so on.

One of La Toyah’s biggest suggestions when looking for good quality plant-based products, is to use the Yuka App. Yuka is a mobile app that scans and analyses labels in the blink of an eye so you can learn at a glance which products are good for you and which ones you should avoid. From food to cosmetics, there’s a lot in a product that can harm our bodies – this app truly has your back though, if a product isn’t good for you, it will even suggest a healthier option.

Honestly Tasty aims to fill that gap with milk-free cheese that (I swear) tastes as good as the traditional one. Of course, this is great news for both vegans and dairy-free alike!

The company also donates 2% of all revenue to charity, including to The Dean Farm Trust, a community-run animal sanctuary in Wales. These days, we can find Honestly Tasty products in a lot of high street shops: from Planet Organic to Selfridges, Tesco and Ocado, plus lots of independent shops.

I have tried many of these products myself, and I can assure you they taste just as good as they look!

The Plant Kitchen range has proven to be a hit amongst the younger generation in particular, so head to your nearest Foodhall or buy online at Ocado and try it for yourself. I’d love to know your thoughts!

Axiology

Axiology Beauty’s mission from the beginning has been to take a stand against the staggering amount of packaging waste produced by the beauty industry – a whopping 120 billion units each year. The brand’s lipsticks have always been cruelty-free, ethically sourced, and vegan, and up until 2022, the tubes were made of 50% post-consumer recycled plastic.

Axiology has now gone a step further: they have abandoned plastic entirely and are focused on tackling the beauty industry’s plastic waste problem completely. The company has switched to using island paper waste to create 100% recyclable boxes for all of its products, including Lip-to Lip Balmies, of my personal favourites.

To obtain this waste, they have partnered with a remarkable women’s cooperative in Bali that transforms the island’s paper waste into stunning packaging. This partnership not only helps in reducing pollution but also offers stable employment and fair wages for women in the region.
