Celebrating Women on Mother’s Day

As International Women’s Day approaches on March 8th and Mother’s Day follows shortly after on Sunday, March 10th, it’s a time to reflect on the invaluable contributions of women to our lives and society as a whole. These occasions provide an opportunity not only to celebrate the mothers, grandmothers, and maternal figures who shape our lives but also to recognise and honour the achievements of women everywhere.

In the spirit of these meaningful celebrations, what better way to show appreciation than through sustainable gifting? This article explores the significance of celebrating women on these special days and how green gifting can serve as a meaningful expression of gratitude and care.

THE HISTORY OF MOTHER'S DAY

The history of Mother’s Day is a rich tapestry woven with threads of ancient traditions and modern customs, with roots stretching back through the ages. In the United Kingdom, the origins of Mother’s Day, or Mothering Sunday as it was initially known, can be traced back to the 17th century.

During this time, a tradition emerged where young people in service were granted a rare day off on the fourth Sunday of Lent. This respite allowed them the opportunity to visit their parents and their mother church. These visits were accompanied by gifts, often including Simnel cake, a light fruit cake associated with Easter. As a result, the day became known as ‘Simnel Sunday,’ and these visits were fondly referred to as ‘going a-mothering’ – thus, the term Mothering Sunday was born.

Meanwhile, across the Atlantic, the modern version of Mother’s Day was taking shape, with President Woodrow Wilson proclaiming the second Sunday in May as Mother’s Day in the United States in 1914. This declaration followed the lead of Anna Jarvis, who organised “Mother’s Day Work Clubs” to address public health issues and promote peace during and after the Civil War. Her efforts laid the foundation for the recognition of maternal figures in American society.

The newfound holiday quickly gained popularity, with people across the country embracing the opportunity to express their love and gratitude for their mothers. Flowers, cards, and other tokens of appreciation became customary gifts, and over time, Mother’s Day has evolved into a global celebration, with many countries around the world adopting similar traditions of honouring motherhood and maternal bonds.

While the commercial aspects of the holiday have become increasingly prominent, the underlying sentiment of expressing gratitude and love for mothers remains at its core.

THE BENEFITS OF GREEN GIFTING

Green Gifts encompass more than just giving plants (which, by the way, is also a massive trend within the green gifting space right now). It involves giving gifts that are both organic and/or sustainable, promoting environmentally friendly practices. This trend has been growing more and more over the years as people of all ages are becoming increasingly eco-conscious and opting for sustainable products. By choosing green gifts, you not only bring joy to the recipient but also contribute to reducing the environmental footprint.

Many of us however, are still unfamiliar with the broader concept of “Green Gifts” and the advantages it offers. Today, I’m bringing you all a list of benefits as well as my usual brand recommendations and gift ideas.

Low Impact on the Environment

Green gifts are usually crafted from natural materials grown without harmful chemicals like pesticides or fertilisers. They could also be produced using recycled or upcycled materials, and generally adhere to a zero or minimal waste policy during manufacturing. Of course, that depends on the type of product you’re purchasing as well as the brand you’re buying it from. So, always make sure to check what the brand value and mission are, to be 100% sure of how you’re making a difference.

Personal Health

Sustainable gifting and products can have a positive impact on personal health as they are often made from natural and organic materials, reducing the exposure to harmful chemicals commonly found in conventional products. This can help in preventing skin irritations, allergies, and other health issues related to chemical exposure. This can have long-term benefits for personal health by reducing exposure to pollution, toxins, and other environmental hazards for yourself and your families alike.

Promotes Ethical Practices

Supporting small, local sustainable companies by purchasing their green and eco-friendly products for your loved ones’ gifts indirectly encourages ethical practices for the recipient. Imagine receiving gifts such as reusable straws, an eco-friendly yoga mat, or organic gardening kits that you’ve never used before. It can inspire the recipient to also engage in activities that benefit their physical and mental health, as well as the planet.
