Rustic Retreats: Glamping Under the STars

Spring has sprung, and summer is just around the corner, so I’m researching all things related to this time of the year! The first thing that pops into my head when I think of Spring and warmer days? Spending time outdoors and enjoying nature in all its glory.  As we say goodbye to those grey winter days, we’re all trying to find more and more ways to spend time in the sunshine and what could be better than glamping, one of the biggest up-and-coming outdoor trends!

I have been fortunate to have had  first-hand experience of glamping whilst living in Africa, each experience offered me a unique blend of adventure and luxury, transforming my experiences from rustic tents in the heart of the wilderness to lavish lodges that embraced the wild while providing comfort and elegance.

Glamping brought me closer to nature, where the sounds of the African night and the brilliance of the starry sky became my companions. Glamping allowed me to experience the raw, untouched splendour of Africa while enjoying the comforts of home, creating memories that will last a lifetime.

What Is Glamping?

If you’re like me and are wondering about “glamping” and its distinction from regular camping, I’m here to explain that to you. Glamping is essentially glamorous camping, blending the charm of nature with the luxury of a carefully curated adventure. Unlike traditional camping, glamping eliminates the need to bring your own equipment as everything is provided by the venue owners that you’re staying in.

Glamping, also known as upscale camping or camping with a touch of glamour, is a modern concept. Coined in 2005 in the UK, it was officially added to the Oxford Dictionary in 2016. The aim is to cater to those seeking a nature retreat with the comfort of amenities like real beds, running water, and proper toilets instead of outhouses, offering a unique outdoor experience. To be honest, this is right up my street!

There is a wide variety of glamping options, from safari tents to yurts, camping cabins, and treehouses. Amenities vary based on the accommodation type but can include real beds, kitchenettes, electricity, and even running water – luxuries not typically found in standard camping setups. It’s a way to enjoy a distinctive natural experience while enjoying the conveniences of a hotel.

ABOUT GLAMPING

As mentioned above, glamping is all about enjoying luxury and comfort whilst in a remote, unique destination surrounded by nature.

It’s convenient

Glamping offers a convenient way to explore the outdoors with hotel-like comforts, eliminating the need for air mattresses, extensive supplies, or tent setups. Basically, you don’t have to think or buy any of the supplies because it’s all prepared for you.

It’s the ideal compromise

Glamping allows you to experience nature while retaining everyday luxuries like running water and comfortable bedding, especially in locations with limited infrastructure. While camping may be more rustic, glamping has that element of service… To be honest, guys, if we have the chance and opportunity to live with luxuries such as running water, electricity and heating and cooling devices, why would we not make the most of it?

It’s all-season enjoyment

I know I said it’s the perfect outdoor activity for Spring, but unlike traditional camping, glamping is designed for year-round enjoyment, with accommodations equipped to handle various weather conditions, including heating and cooling options.

It’s family-friendly

Glamping caters to both kids who enjoy camping and adults seeking simple luxuries, making it a perfect option for family vacations and meeting guest expectations in various accommodation settings.

Glamping, once a niche concept, is now widely available at many campsites, offering both traditional camping and luxurious glamping options to cater to diverse preferences. When exploring glamping holidays online, you’ll encounter a wide array of accommodation options, from safari tents to treehouses and log cabins, each offering a unique experience tailored to various tastes and social media feeds.

Yurts, Tipis & Safari Tents

Often associated with glamping, large canvas tents provide a cosy staycation reminiscent of nomadic tribes or safari adventures. While these tents retain the essence of traditional camping, they offer modern comforts like plush beds, tables and chairs and some even have a wood burner. However, they are best enjoyed during the warmer summer months in the UK. The National Trust have a range of glamping yurts, safari tents and hammocks around the UK.

Treehouses & Holiday Cottages

Wooden structures such as treehouses and cottages offer more weather-resistant accommodations than canvas tents, often equipped with amenities like kitchenettes and private bathrooms. Sleeping in a luxurious treehouse can be a childhood dream come true!

Shepherd’s Huts & Bohemian Caravans

Glamping in posh shepherd’s huts or wooden caravans adds a touch of luxury to your holiday experience, reminiscent of Romani dwellings. These snug options are ideal for romantic getaways but may not be as suitable for families or individuals with mobility issues.

Glamping Pods

Glamping pods, a popular feature at many sites, are timber cabins inspired by the domed structures found in Native American cultures. These fully sustainable lodges, crafted with a distinctive curved shape, provide a unique glamping experience and are perfect for holidays aimed at the whole family!

Weird & unusual

If you are looking for something out of the ordinary, then look no further; Canopy & Stars aim to provide distinctive and unforgettable stays that stand out from the ordinary. Founded on a passion for nature and creativity,  and now a leading voice in unique outdoor holidays, the company is employee-owned, a certified B Corp, and operates a charitable trust donating to environmental causes. Every location they work with is personally inspected to ensure it aligns with their values of supporting people, the planet, and providing extraordinary nature experiences.

Glamping Activities

While glamping, the possibilities are almost endless. You can engage in various activities that embrace the beautiful natural surroundings of the site, without needing to be an avid hiker or mountain biker to savour the glamping experience. From walking to fishing, stargazing, herb picking, or capturing stunning nature photography, you can basically use your camping pod as a convenient home base for exploring nearby towns, villages, and tourist attractions. Whether you prefer Munro bagging or window shopping, exploring castles or cattle, indulging in afternoon tea or cooking over a campfire, a glamping trip allows you to indulge in activities you love with your favourite people.

Besides the wider area, there’s also a lot you can do whilst staying in your camping pod. Ask yourself, what would you do if you were just camping? You can do the same but in the comfort of a luxury stay. You can gather around a firepit for toasted marshmallows and storytelling under the starry sky, get barbequing or unwind in your private hot tub for some serene relaxation. Can you think of any reason why glamping is not just as perfect (if not more) of a holiday idea as traditional camping?! I certainly can’t.

WHAT TO LOOK FOR with YOUR NEXT GLAMPING EXPERIENCE

If this type of Spring holiday is something you’re looking to experience this year, there are a few trends and glamping facts you should know about. This is so you can make your glamping site choice as informed as possible…

Nature as a Healing Sanctuary

More travellers are seeking solace in nature to unwind from the demands of modern life. Some glamping sites are incorporating activities such as forest therapy or nature bathing into their glamping offerings to promote wellness and digital detox. Think outdoor yoga, sound healing, etc…

Rise of Outdoor Festivals

With the Summer season around the corner, it’s also outdoor festival season. This usually increases the demand for glamping sites and it can make it a little bit harder for those of who like to book their holidays last-minute.

Hotel’s Dynamic Spaces

Glamping can help hotels maximise revenue from outdoor areas by offering more beds with a minimal initial investment. Be sure to check out hotel’s availability and whether they offer any glamping bedrooms on site. You never know close to your home how a great glamping site can be.

Sustainable Stays

Eco-conscious travellers are drawn to glamping for its low carbon footprint and commitment to environmental protection. It sounds like glamping may be the perfect staycation choice for all of you who read my blog! There are plenty of glamping sites out there that are making the most of environmental sustainability by implementing vegan and/or eco-friendly products on their properties: From organic beddings to plastic-free toiletries, be sure to do your research…

Look for Technology

Another luxury that you should expect from your glamping site is a seamless and personalised experience, from booking to check-in. Most of these glamping sites are implementing modern technology features like mobile check-in and personalised services to enhance guest satisfaction. Be sure to look out for these features when booking online. If certain aspects have not been already automated online, it might become a little difficult to get in touch with the property manager in case you encounter an issue while in the middle of nowhere!
