Hi, I’m Suzi and this Earth Day, I’m diving deep into something close to my heart: our planet, the people who protect it, and the power we hold in creating real change. Tuesday 22nd April marks the 55th year of celebrating Earth Day—a global movement that shines a light on environmental issues and encourages sustainability.
Last year, I focused on the global waste problem, sharing why it matters and how small changes at home can make a big difference. This year, I’m diving deep into something close to my heart: our planet, the people who protect it, and the power we hold in creating real change.
WHAT IS EARTH DAY & WHY DOES IT MATTER?
Every year on April 22nd, over a billion individuals from more than 190 countries come together to celebrate Earth Day, a global initiative focused on safeguarding our planet. This day is more than just a mark on the calendar; it embodies a movement centered on awareness, action, and optimism. Whether it’s cleaning up litter, planting herb gardens, or participating in protests and ecological initiatives, Earth Day empowers individuals and communities to foster significant change.
The Earth Day Network plays a crucial role in supporting this movement. Their website is a treasure trove of inspiration and knowledge, offering petitions to sign, resources to enhance environmental education, and a global map showcasing local clean-up events. What resonates most with me about Earth Day is that it represents not just a single day but a mindset that inspires us to embrace sustainable living throughout the entire year.
"Our Power, Our Planet"
This year’s Earth Day theme, “Our Power, Our Planet,” serves as an inspiring rallying cry. It underscores one of the most urgent demands of our era: the swift transition to clean, renewable energy. The Earth Day Network is mobilising individuals, governments and businesses with the goal of tripling global renewable energy generation by 2030 – and I fully support this initiative. This year places significant emphasis on Earth Action. Whether it’s showing support on social media, joining a local cleanup, or incorporating Earth Day lessons into the classroom, the message remains clear: each of us has a part to play.
Here in the UK, there’s a growing calendar of events happening throughout April to get involved with:
- National Portrait Gallery DJ Night (April 25): A creative evening linking art and music to Earth Day’s theme of ‘power.’
- Sankofa Expressive Arts School (April 8–10): A children’s holiday workshop using art to tell a story about environmental action.
- London International Youth Science Forum (July 23 onwards): A STEM summer camp inspiring the next generation of climate scientists.
- Kings Cross Earth Day Clean-Up (April 22): A community-led litter pick with social vibes.
- Clean Up the Wetlands at Blackhorse Mills (April 22): Help reduce plastic waste while connecting with nature.
- Unused Tech Collection (April 22–26): A private initiative gathering old electronics for donation and reuse.
These are just a few, and the Earth Day website has even more inspiration, whether you’re in London or beyond. You can check it out here.
WHY GREEN ENERGY IS OUR FUTURE?
So, why the push for renewable energy? Because the science is clear: it’s our most powerful tool in the fight against climate change. Fossil fuels like oil, coal and gas are not only finite, but they’re responsible for the vast majority of planet-warming emissions. In contrast, renewable energy comes from sources that naturally replenish.
Wind power
Wind power involves capturing the kinetic energy of moving air through the use of turbines. These turbines convert the wind’s energy into mechanical power, which can then be transformed into electricity. Wind power is a renewable energy source that produces no emissions during operation and can be installed on land or offshore, where wind speeds tend to be higher and more consistent.
Solar power
Solar power harnesses energy from the sun by using solar panels, also known as photovoltaic cells, to convert sunlight directly into electricity. This form of energy is abundant and renewable, offering a clean alternative to fossil fuels. Solar power systems can be installed on rooftops, in large solar farms, or integrated into building materials, making them versatile for various applications.
Geothermal energy
Geothermal energy involves tapping into the Earth’s internal heat, which is stored in the form of hot water or steam beneath the Earth’s surface. This heat can be used to generate electricity or provide direct heating. Geothermal plants have a small footprint and can provide a reliable, constant source of energy, independent of weather conditions.

Hydropower
Hydropower generates electricity by using the flow of water, typically from rivers or dams, to spin turbines connected to generators. It is one of the oldest and most established forms of renewable energy. Hydropower is highly efficient and can provide a continuous supply of electricity, as long as water flow is maintained. It also offers the benefit of being able to rapidly adjust to electricity demand.
Wave & tidal power
Wave and tidal power utilise the natural movements of the ocean to produce energy. Wave power captures the energy of surface waves, while tidal power exploits the rise and fall of tides. Both methods are predictable and offer a consistent energy source. These technologies are still developing but hold significant potential for coastal regions.
Biomass energy
Biomass energy is derived from organic materials, such as plant and animal waste, which can be converted into electricity, heat, or biofuels. To be sustainable, biomass must be sourced responsibly to avoid deforestation and ensure that the carbon released is balanced by the carbon absorbed by new plant growth. Biomass can help reduce waste and complement other renewable energy sources.

The UK, with its windy coastlines and technological innovation, is uniquely placed to lead this charge. In fact, by 2015, renewables overtook coal in electricity generation for the first time, and prices for solar and wind have plummeted since then. New battery storage technologies mean we can now store green energy more efficiently, even when the sun isn’t shining or the wind isn’t blowing. But this shift isn’t just technical; it’s social. As we phase out polluting industries, we need a “just transition” retraining and supporting workers as they move into green jobs.
There’s still a long way to go, and government policies haven’t always kept pace. But Earth Day is a reminder: the power to change the world doesn’t just sit with politicians, it lies with all of us.
EARTH DAY BRAND HEROES: SUSTAINABLE BRANDS RECOMMENDATIONS
I wanted to wrap this up by spotlighting some incredible UK-based brands across fashion, beauty, wellness, and lifestyle that are really walking the talk. So, you’re feeling inspired by Earth Day and ready to make some changes (love that for us!), one of the most accessible (and fun!) ways to support the planet is by aligning our everyday purchases with our values. Whether it’s what we wear, put on our skin, eat, or decorate our homes with, there are so many brands out there doing truly incredible work when it comes to sustainability, ethical sourcing, and positive environmental impact.
Here are some of my favourite Earth Day-approved brands in fashion, beauty, wellness, and lifestyle, all of which deserve a little extra love this April (and beyond):
Neal’s Yard Remedies
As one of the UK’s pioneering certified organic beauty brands, Neal’s Yard Remedies stands out as a true innovator. They prioritise ethically sourced ingredients, champion fair trade, and use recyclable packaging for their products. Their holistic philosophy towards beauty and wellness is deeply connected to nature, and they are strong advocates for climate action too.

House of Sunny
House of Sunny, located in East London, is cherished for its trend-setting designs that prioritise sustainability. They focus on producing in small quantities, utilise vegan materials and are dedicated to reducing waste through careful design and manufacturing practices.

Beauty Kitchen
Beauty Kitchen are an acclaimed beauty brand dedicated to a clear mission: to develop effective products that have a minimal environmental footprint. They implement a ‘Return · Refill · Repeat’ program aimed at significantly reducing single-use plastics. Additionally, they prioritise transparency regarding every ingredient and detail in their supply chain.

UpCircle Beauty
UpCircle is revolutionizing the beauty industry by transforming food waste, such as used coffee grounds and chai spices, into effective skincare solutions. Each product showcases a narrative of circular beauty, demonstrating that sustainability and effectiveness can coexist harmoniously.

Peachy Den
Renowned for their cult-favorite comfortwear and figure-flattering designs, Peachy Den emphasises local, small-batch production. They minimise excess inventory, collaborate with UK factories, and craft fashion that endures beyond a single season

The Ethical Shop
An online-only treasure trove of conscious goods, The Ethical Shop supports causes close to my heart: fair trade, veganism, organic sourcing, and social justice. What’s more, profits go directly into funding independent journalism that’s been championing human rights since 1973. Everything from the gifts to the homeware is categorised by ethical criteria, so you can shop by your values, whether you care most about animal rights, recycling, or UK-made craftsmanship. I especially love that they collaborate with charities and advocacy groups, turning everyday purchases into powerful acts of support.

Abel & Cole
I can’t talk about sustainable living without shouting out Abel & Cole. What began with a humble box of spuds is now one of the UK’s leading organic grocery delivery services. Their commitment to seasonal, eco-conscious produce is as fresh as their fruit and veg (which, by the way, are a dream). By ordering from them, you’re not just reducing food miles and packaging waste, you’re backing British farmers and eco-conscious food systems. Think of them as your weekly Earth Day partner in crime… who also brings snacks.
Oliver Bonas
You might know Oliver Bonas for their gorgeous homewares and stylish fashion pieces, but did you know they’re also big players in the sustainable fashion movement? As members of Textiles 2030, the Ethical Trading Initiative, and Sedex, they’re constantly working to reduce waste, support ethical labour practices, and promote transparency across their supply chain. They’ve even launched a partnership with Reskinned, which allows you to trade in pre-loved OB items for credit. Fashion-forward and planet-friendly? Yes, please.

Formula Botanica
This one’s for all the skincare obsessives (guilty!). Formula Botanica is an online school that teaches people how to formulate their own natural skincare and haircare products. Since 2012, they’ve empowered thousands to ditch conventional beauty brands in favour of clean, green alternatives, some of whom have gone on to launch their own sustainable indie beauty brands. Not only are their courses top-tier, but their mission to demystify ingredients and decentralise beauty knowledge is making waves in the green beauty world. Education truly is power, and in this case, it smells amazing too.

Owl + Lark
Sleep and sustainability? Count me in. Owl + Lark are redefining wellness by combining sleep science with eco-conscious design. Their products, from bedding to future-facing sleep tech, are designed to work with your body’s natural circadian rhythm, enhancing rest and overall health. What makes them extra Earth Day-worthy is their deep commitment to sustainability at every level: ethical production, long-lasting materials, supply chain transparency, and a proactive approach to minimising environmental impact. We can really rest easy, knowing our bedtime routine is better for the planet.

As we celebrate the 55th Earth Day, it’s clear that real change doesn’t happen in a single day—it’s built through consistent choices, collective action, and conscious living. The brands highlighted here prove that sustainability isn’t just a trend, but a responsibility woven into everyday business.
Whether you’re supporting eco-conscious companies, rethinking your daily habits, or simply spreading awareness, your actions matter. Let’s keep the spirit of Earth Day alive all year round—because protecting our planet is a commitment worth making every single day.
