Christmas in Marrakech — and a Meaningful Meal at Amal

This Christmas was our first without my dad. It felt strange and heavy, and for once we wanted something truly different — not just another holiday, but a chance to reconnect, to feel something new, and to do something that mattered. So when my sister’s partner invited us to Marrakech — where he has a house — we packed our bags and embraced the adventure.

Marrakech was vibrant, colourful, and full of energy — the perfect antidote to the quiet heaviness we’d been carrying. We wandered the souks, marvelled at riads tucked away behind unassuming doors, and ate at some unforgettable restaurants. But one place stood out for reasons far deeper than its food: Amal Women’s Training Center & Moroccan Restaurant.

AMAL - More Than a Meal

On the surface, Amal is a lovely spot to enjoy Moroccan cuisine — rich tagines, fluffy couscous, and the kind of warm, fragrant mint tea that makes you linger at the table. But this is no ordinary restaurant. Every dish is prepared by women who are part of Amal’s culinary training programme, designed to empower disadvantaged women with skills, confidence, and real opportunities.

In Morocco, women make up only about 25% of the workforce, and many face barriers to employment due to social, economic, and cultural challenges. Amal tackles this head-on by providing hands-on training in professional cooking and hospitality, and then helping graduates find jobs in the local food industry. The results are remarkable — over 300 women trained since 2013, with more than 80% going on to employment after graduating.

A Space to Thrive

What I loved most is what Amal stands for — not just teaching skills, but creating a space where women know they belong. Their mission talks about offering a safe and loving environment “where strong, resilient women can rewrite their narratives and step into their power.” That phrase stayed with me.

“where strong, resilient women can rewrite their narratives and step into their power.”

When we were there, we felt it — in the way the women welcomed us, laughed with us, and showed us how to prepare some traditional dishes. It wasn’t just a class, it was an exchange of stories and warmth. I listened as some shared how much this place meant to them, giving not only skills, but dignity and hope.

Real Impact

Amal’s work goes beyond kitchen walls. They have multiple centres in Marrakech and even pilot projects like a Sign Language Café staffed by women from the deaf community — offering another avenue for inclusion and employment.

For visitors like us, every meal, every class, every tagine prepared becomes part of something bigger. The social enterprise model means that 100% of the restaurant’s revenue goes directly back into the cause — supporting the training programmes and helping more women build sustainable futures.

An Immersive Cultural Experience

One of the things that makes Amal so special is how it invites visitors to become part of the story. Located in their lush Targa Center, Amal offers a hands-on cooking class that is far more than just learning a recipe. It’s a relaxed, joyful three-hour experience where you cook alongside Amal’s chefs, prepare your own Moroccan dish, and learn about Moroccan cuisine, culture, and the work Amal does.

The class begins with a traditional Moroccan tea ceremony and ends by sitting down together to enjoy what is quite honestly some of the best food you’ll eat in Morocco. What really stood out to me is the atmosphere — people from all over the world cooking, talking, laughing, and sharing stories. It’s a safe, open space to learn not only about food, but about the experiences of Moroccan women themselves. Supporting Amal never felt more natural or meaningful.

Supporting Life’s Biggest Moments

Beyond the restaurant and classes, Amal also offers a full A-to-Z catering service, supporting everything from intimate coffee breaks and brunches to large buffets, sit-down meals, weddings, anniversaries, and conferences. They take care of everything — food, tables, flatware, and all the details — while ensuring every event supports their mission of women’s empowerment.

It’s another reminder that Amal’s impact stretches far beyond their walls, weaving purpose into celebrations and milestones of all kinds.

How We Can Help

What struck me most is that Amal makes it easy for anyone to get involved. Whether through a one-time or monthly donation, legacy giving, partnerships, or simply spreading the word, there are many ways to support their work. Even dining there, taking a cooking class, or choosing Amal to cater an event directly contributes to empowering women and creating lasting change. But Amal gave us perspective, connection, and something deeply meaningful to carry home.

Why Amal Stayed With Me

Sitting together that day, enjoying food that was so much more than food, we felt closer — to each other, to our own healing, and to the community around us. Morocco gave us spice and colour, laughter and adventure. But Amal gave us perspective, connection, and something deeply meaningful to carry home.

If your travels ever bring you to Marrakech, this restaurant should be on your list — not just for the delicious meals, but for the chance to be part of something that changes lives, one woman at a time.
